Description
The Luang Prabang Lumbar uses an old and traditional method that belongs to the Blue Hmong hill tribe in Laos. The unique textile is handwoven with natural hemp fibers. Hmong artisans then use a batik technique to create the geometric patterns before dying the textile with natural indigo plants to get the rich blue tone.

The Story // In the mountainous region of northern Laos, a number of Hmong villages are keeping the tradition of hemp weaving alive. This batik practice is old and traditional to the Blue Hmong hill tribe. The wax-resist and indigo-dyed hemp cloth was primarily used for pleated skirts and baby carriers. Batik is an ancient form of dyeing fabric, by hand, using a resist dye technique. Motifs and patterns are hand drawn with bee’s wax. The fabric is then dyed several times before the wax resist is boiled off to create the lighter color.
